Metallica held auditions for Newsted's permanent replacement in early 2003, after St Anger's completion, for which Bob Rock recorded bass. Bassists that auditioned included Pepper Keenan, Jeordie White, Scott Reeder, Eric Avery, Danny Lohner, and Chris Wyse. Following three months of auditions, Robert Trujillo, formerly of Suicidal Tendencies and Ozzy Osbourne's band, was chosen as the new bassist.In a scene from the documentary "Some Kind Of Monster" after Robert Trujillo's audition, guitarist Kirk Hammett notes that he uses his fingers to play, rather than a pick and mentions that it "hasn't been that way since Cliff (Burton)".

Although I like Trujillo's style I think he does not really fit Metallica visually. He did fit Suicidal Tendencies though :)

I agree...I thought Jason was best suited for Metallica....especially because of his backing vocals
